Navigation UX for futuristic skyscrapers
Telus Sky is one of Canada's smartest buildings. We designed the digital wayfinding experience that helps tenants, visitors, and delivery personnel navigate the complex efficiently using an intuitive tap-and-map interface deployed on kiosks and mobile devices.
Navigating a 60-story mixed-use building is nothing like finding your way through a mall. Multiple tenant types, security zones, parking levels, and transit connections meant the wayfinding system needed to be smart, fast, and accessible to everyone from delivery drivers to C-suite executives.
We created a layered navigation system that adapts to user context. Visitors get simple point-to-point directions. Tenants get personalized shortcuts. Building ops get floor management tools. One design system, three user experiences.
On-site research was critical. We spent days in Telus Sky observing how people actually moved through the building. We tested prototypes on kiosks and mobile with real visitors, iterating the interaction model based on observed behavior rather than assumptions.
What made this stand out
Context-aware navigation
The system adapts to who you are — visitors get simple directions, tenants get shortcuts, ops get floor tools.
Kiosk-first design
Purpose-built for large touch displays — high contrast, large tap targets, and sub-2-second routing.
Real-time building data
Live integration with building management systems for elevator status, room availability, and crowd flow.
What we shipped
How we built it
Observe
On-site ethnographic research, stakeholder interviews, and user flow mapping for 3 building types.
Map
Created digital floor plans, defined navigation zones, and established routing algorithms.
Prototype
Interactive kiosk and mobile prototypes tested with real building visitors and tenants.
Build
Kiosk UI, mobile app, and admin dashboard developed with real-time building data integration.
Deploy
Staged rollout across 3 buildings with analytics, feedback collection, and iterative improvement.
The wayfinding system became a selling point for prospective tenants. It makes our buildings feel as smart as the technology inside them.
